Companionship in the Military Order of Foreign Wars of the United States (MOFW) is conferred on duly qualified, duly sponsored officers - both commissioned and warrant.  Active military service in or during any of our foreign wars or military expeditions will qualify an officer as a Veteran Companion, as will honorable services as a commissioned officer in the armed forces of our allies.  Individuals who served in an enlisted status during such wars or expeditions, and who were subsequently commissioned or warranted as an officer, will qualify as a Veteran Companion.  Descent from such an officer may also qualify an individual for Hereditary or Junior Companionship.  Such service must be satisfactorily shown to have been performed in one of the following wars or expeditions (Section 5, Article III, MOFW Constitution, as of April 2003):

(1)  The War of the Revolution (April 19, 1775 - April 19, 1783).
(2)  The War with Tripoli (June 10, 1801 - June 4, 1805).

Famous Companions of the Order

The rolls of the Order contain the names of many famous leaders since our founding in 1894, prior to the Spanish-American War.  Beginning with Admiral Dewey, the Order has been represented in every subsequent war or conflict including:  General Smedley Butler, Generals Pershing and MacArthur, Admiral Halsey, General and later President Eisenhower, Generals Haig and others.

Down through the years, we count many Presidents, members of the Cabinet, and important persons from all walks of life as Companions.  The strength of the Order, however, is built on the hundreds of loyal Companions who have served their country honorably and proudly.  Joining us in this proud history are the many Hereditary Companions, sons and daughters of present or past Companions, carrying on their proud names or descendants of officers who have served in our country's wars since the Revolution.

The important past, present and future of our country and its military are the guiding forces of the Order.  As such, they will continue to be important to all those interested in its welfare.  The MOFW takes pride in having set the standard as the prestigious Military-Hereditary Order by our illustrious history, and our select group of Companions, past and present.  We recognize it is our duty to continue to serve in the future as we have in the past.  We invite you to join us in this patriotic endeavor!

We welcome eligible candidates for membership in either of our two classifications of Companionship.  Yearly membership dues in the Military Order of Foreign Wars vary with State Commandery affiliation.  Our Registrar-General will be able to answer all of your membership questions.  Your application for membership or any questions about membership should be forwarded directly to the Commander-General Emeritas.
